Ice and Snow Melt Products to Use at Home
Every winter the problem is the same. Too much ice or snow on your driveway or patio and not enough know-how or tools or even muscle to melt it safely away. There are various ice and snow melt products that can do this very easily, safely and efficiently, however not many people know about them.
The products are firstly used to increase safety outside the home and also prevent damages from ice that builds up on various places. These products contain salt but also other chemicals because they stop ice from becoming hard. There are several ones that can work optimally and you need to take a few things into account, including price, the weather conditions over time where these will be used and also how eco-friendly they are (if you care about the issue at all).
There are two types of ice and snow melt products right now on the market. You can go for salt or urea. When you go for salt, it will contain either potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium chloride or calcium chloride. Sometimes these salts are mixed together for best performance. The urea type ones are often used in lawn fertilizers and they are great for melting ice and snow.
If you have a budget issue, the cheapest option right now is the rock salt. Also you might find from several companies various mixes that can offer you a cheaper alternative and still work great. Another aspect of getting the best product for your needs is whether you have an outdoors area where the dangers or slips and falls are great and people could get into nasty accidents, for example if there are elderly at home. In this case a faster acting melting solution works best. However in normal circumstances these might be too much and you don’t need that.
If eco-friendliness is one of your main concerns, then you should rather go for mixes that contain chloride, however in that case you might have to pay more. Of course, it goes without saying that you should not ingest any of the types, and you should consult your doctor immediately if you’ve done so by accident.
These Chicago Salting products are not suitable for wood surfaces, so avoid them on your patio or deck if they are made of wood. The salt in them will eat at the wood and chip away at it with time. Even if you have other surfaces outdoors and some of the salt went in the house, you need ot vacuum and use a damp sponge to clean up the remains as they might eat away at your carpet or wood flooring.
